I should be writing a paper that's due tomorrow. But guess what? I'm not. I do have one of the relevant books open in front of me, so I can pretend like I'm doing research. It's the thought that counts, right?

For years in my early teens, I said "revelant" instead of "relevant."

so learn the gentle art of making enemies

It's official- this is now the diary of a bronze level international standard ballroom dancer. A professional ballroom dancer has decreed that I can do the waltz and the quickstep passably well. yippee.

Originally I was actually looking forward to writing this paper that I'm currently in the process of not writing. But it's turning out to be a lot more complicated than I thought it would be. Because none of the people actually qualified to do a good, in-depth, unbiased study on this particular issue have bothered to do so, and most of what's out there consists of people who are educated in the general area (Egyptology) only to the extent that it allows them to comment on this specific topic, and only to the extent that it allows them to "prove" that whatever they've already decided is true. Each side acts as if the other side is completely ignorant and just out to do a piss-poor job of discrediting their side. And each side is really nasty and nitpicky when commenting on the other- and they like to pick apart minor details of the opponent's argument while ignoring or attempting to trivialize many of the important things the other was trying to say. Objectivity seems to be the last thing any of them wants, at least in practice. Real contempt for the other side comes through in their writings. And so, sifting out the actual facts from the propaganda is very difficult. Does that sound odd concerning the state of scholarly research on an obscure topic in Egyptology? Here's a hint- it's a religious issue. The attitudes of the religious can really get tiresome. It's that refusal to accept anything that doesn't coincide with their preconceived notions of reality that bugs me the most. But, you know what they say- if you keep an open mind, people will throw trash in it. That's probably why I'm so miserable. Stupid objectivity! Stupid willingness to consider other points of view! Stupid tendency to wonder if what I believe is really right! Stupid intellectual honesty! Don't make the same heinous mistakes as I did, gentle readers! Unquestioning faith is the way to go! Take the easy way, you'll thank me later!
